EconChallenge 2015 State Finals
Teams from Novi High School and International Academy-Okma held off teams from International Academy-Okma and Chelsea, respectively, in this year’s Quiz Bowls to be crowned 2015 Michigan Econ Challenge State Champions. Novi High School captured the crown for the David Ricardo Division while International Academy-Okma the Adam Smith Division.
The 2015 competition was held Wednesday, March 25 at the Walsh College-Novi campus. The Michigan Council on Economic Education (MCEE) conducted the statewide competition with sponsorship from Amerisure Insurance Cos.
In the 14th year of the competition, this year’s Challenge set two records for the number of schools participating in the statewide Online Qualifier in February and number of schools participating in the State Finals. Over 120 teams made up of over 300 high school students from across the state participated in this year’s Statewide Online Qualifier. “This was definitely the most statewide representative State Finals we have ever had,” stated Dr. David Dieterle, President and Chief Academic Officer of the Michigan Council on Economic Education. ” Only 30 teams of the 120 that participated were invited to the State Finals. And this year we had teams from as far away as Ishpheming (Ishpheming Westwood), Sault St. Marie, and Houghton Lake which made this year’s State Finals a truly statewide event.”
High school students competed in two Divisions, Adam Smith or David Ricardo. The David Ricardo Division is for those high school students who are, or have, been in a regular Economics class. The Adam Smith Division is for the high school students who are, or have been, in an AP, IB, or past David Ricardo champion.
During the State Finals, in the morning the students engaged in pencil and paper tests on micro, macro, and international/current events. The most exciting part of the day’s competition was the Quiz Bowls which pitted the top two teams with the highest scores from each Division during the morning sessions.
