The MiTown Economic Development Challenge is a competition where students are challenged to analyze their local economic situation and challenges within the greater scope of Michigan, then devise a plan where the local government and all relevant stakeholders can improve the economic landscape of their hometown.

ELIGIBILITY

  • High school students residing in Michigan are eligible to participate in the competition.
  • Each team must have at least 3 students, but no more than 5, and at least one adult advisor. Advisors are required to attend the competition round with their students.
  • Each school may enter up to two teams.



THE MI TOWN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGE TASK

Teams of 3-5 students will create a 12 minute presentation which will be supplemented with up to 8 minutes of Q and A. Teams will create the presentation on their home town’s economy, highlighting an economic problem or challenge while considering a few of the following points:

  • Local infrastructure and zoning 
  • Permits, licensing, and regulation 
  • Developer-government relationship 
  • Housing needs
  • Redevelopment of existing structures

Teams will then brainstorm creative economic solutions that the local government and stakeholders could utilize to help address the issue.

2 minutes: Michigan Economic Overview
2 minutes: Local Economic Overview
3 minutes: Local Problem Overview
5 minutes: Proposed Solution


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Each school may apply for up to 2 teams to participate in the MiTown Economic Development Challenge. The teams should consist of a minimum of 3 students with a maximum of 5 students per team. This application will close on February 24 at 5:00pm or when we have reached our capacity of 20 teams. When registration closes we will email teachers to collect the names of the participating students from each school and any dietary restrictions, etc.

Lunch will be available for students beginning at 11:30am. Presentation slots will be assigned 1 week prior to the competition. Teams should plan on arriving to the Federal Reserve 30 minutes prior to their scheduled presentation time. Presentations will last 20-25 minutes and will be scheduled from 8:30am-11:30am. When not presenting, teams may choose to leave the Federal Reserve and explore the revitalized City of Detroit with their advisor. All teams must be present at the Federal Reserve at 11:30am for lunch, our guest speaker, and awards ceremony. The event will conclude by 1:00pm. 

Each member of the winning team, and their advisor, will be awarded a $250 cash prize.
